The Welcoming Shelter is an adaptable garden structure that explores how small-scale architecture can respond directly to changing use, weather and social conditions. Designed as a kinetic, openable pavilion, the project blurs the boundary between inside and outside; creating a flexible space for gathering, retreat and everyday use within a garden setting.

The structure is defined by its ability to transform. Openable elements allow the shelter to shift from an enclosed, intimate space to a fully open pavilion; encouraging occupation throughout the seasons and reinforcing a close relationship with the surrounding landscape. The design prioritises simplicity, craft and movement, demonstrating how adaptable architecture can enhance even modest sites.

The project was recognised for its clarity of concept and thoughtful execution, winning the AJ Small Projects 2016 competition.
The award highlighted the shelter’s ability to combine architectural ambition with practical construction, using kinetic principles to create a joyful, functional and sustainable piece of garden architecture.
