This is a sensitive farm renovation near Harrogate, set within the Yorkshire National Landscape. Charles Redman Architects led the design and planning of the project; transforming a long-derelict farmhouse and wider farmstead into a robust, energy-efficient home and working rural environment.
The project balances heritage conservation, sustainable design and modern living, responding carefully to landscape policy, agricultural context and long-term use. Planning permission for the extension was granted in July 2025, with completion anticipated in March 2026.

The existing farmhouse had been vacant for several years and was previously divided into two separate dwellings. Our approach focused on repair, rationalisation and enhancement, restoring the building’s integrity while adapting it for modern family life.
At first floor level, a new master suite and three bedrooms were created. Ceiling structures were vaulted to improve spatial quality, with original oak trusses carefully exposed to celebrate the building’s agricultural heritage. Additional insulation was introduced to walls and roof assemblies, significantly improving thermal performance and ensuring compliance with current building regulations.
At ground floor level, the layout was reconfigured to form an open dining space alongside a study and snug. A carefully scaled extension provides an open-plan kitchen, sitting and dining area; connecting the farmhouse more clearly to its setting while maintaining a restrained architectural language.

Beyond the house, Charles Redman Architects led a wider farm masterplan, addressing access, safety and long-term adaptability across the site. A new agricultural track was introduced to improve access to the property while reducing disruption to neighbouring land and dwellings.
Existing barns were assessed and sensitively renovated to improve structural safety and usability, allowing for future conversion into an annex and supporting spaces appropriate for contemporary rural living. The proposals respond to both agricultural needs and planning constraints associated with the National Landscape designation.
The result is a coherent farm conversion in Yorkshire, where buildings, landscape and access work together to support modern use while respecting the character of the site.
