Custom Balcony
Huddersfield

Status: constructed

2021

Shaping a bespoke outdoor structure that responds precisely to site constraints; sunlight; and existing fabric.

This custom balcony project in Huddersfield was carefully designed to wrap around an existing retaining wall; creating a generous outdoor space positioned to capture the evening sunset. The balcony was precisely tailored to the site constraints; ensuring it felt integral to the property rather than an add-on. Proportions; alignment; and material choices were all considered to enhance views; light; and usability.

Crafted detailing and close collaboration to deliver a refined and durable structure.

The detailing was developed to match the character of the existing railings; allowing the new structure to sit comfortably within its context. A bespoke staircase was introduced to connect the balcony to the lower terrace; improving circulation and encouraging use of the wider garden. Charles Redman Architects worked closely with a local metal fabricator throughout the design and construction process; refining details; coordinating fabrication; and delivering a robust; elegant solution optimised for both performance and craft.
